Dark tea is one of China's six major tea categories and a post-fermented tea. Its unique processing and aging properties have earned it a prominent position in the tea market. Dark tea is primarily produced in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi, and can be categorized into several types based on origin, raw materials, and processing techniques. This article will detail the main classifications and characteristics of dark tea.

Hunan Dark Tea
Hunan Dark Tea is a prominent representative of Chinese dark tea, primarily produced in Anhua County, hence the name "Anhua Dark Tea." Representative varieties include Fuzhuan Tea, Heizhuan Tea, Huazhuan Tea, and Tianjian, Gongjian, and Shengjian (collectively known as the "Three Jians").

● Fuzhuan Tea: Made from pressed dark tea leaves, Fuzhuan Tea is distinguished by the growth of a beneficial microorganism, "Golden Flower" (Eurocystis cristatum), within the bricks, resulting in a unique fungal and floral aroma and health benefits.

● Black Brick Tea: Rectangular brick-shaped, dark-brown in color, with a pure aroma and rich flavor.

● Huazhuan Tea: Evolved from Huajuan Tea (Qianliang Tea), this tea features a brick-shaped pattern and a mellow flavor.

● Sanjian Tea: Made from Grades 1 to 3 black tea leaves, Tianjian is the highest quality, Gongjian is the next best, and Shengjian is coarser and older, but all possess a rich, aged aroma.

● Hubei Old Green Tea: Hubei Old Green Tea is primarily produced in Chibi, Tongshan, and Chongyang, all within Xianning City, Hubei Province. It is divided into surface tea and inner tea, with Qingzhuan Tea being its representative product.

● Qingzhuan Tea: Made from aged green tea leaves, this tea is square in shape, has a greenish-brown color, and an orange-red tea soup. It offers a rich flavor and a unique aged aroma.

● Laoqing Tea: Ranked from Grades 1 to 6, this tea uses coarser, older raw materials, making it suitable for long-term storage and offering a more refined taste after aging. Sichuan Tibetan Tea (Border Tea)
● Sichuan dark tea, also known as Tibetan tea or border tea, is primarily supplied to highland areas such as Tibet and Qinghai. It is divided into Kangzhuan tea and Jinjian tea.

● Kangzhuan tea: Made from tea leaves from areas like Ya'an and Leshan, it is compacted and compacted, making it suitable for drinking in high-altitude areas and aiding digestion.

● Jinjian tea: Coarser and older than Kangzhuan tea, it also aids digestion and reduces greasiness.

● Pu'er Ripe Tea: Features a firm, brown-red appearance, a rich, bright red tea soup, and a mellow, sweet, and lingering flavor. It possesses a unique aged aroma and medicinal value. Guangxi Liubao Tea
● Guangxi Liubao Tea, produced in Liubao Town, Cangwu County, Wuzhou City, is one of China's most famous historical teas, renowned for its distinctive betel nut aroma and its aging-increasing quality.

● Liubao Tea is made from fresh leaves of a local large-leaf tea plantation. Through a series of processes, including withering, rolling, piling, re-rolling, and drying, followed by long-term aging, it develops its unique "red, rich, aged, and mellow" quality.
